This Valentine’s Day, to celebrate American Heart Month, the Franciscan Center, in association with the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF), will be hosting a special “Healthy Heart and Soul Monday” event to promote heart-healthy food choices and behaviors among its poor and homeless clients. Since launching a Healthy Monday campaign in late September, in an effort to promote dignity among and improve the health of Baltimore’s most needy citizens, the Franciscan Center has been offering a nutritious, meat-free option each Monday, while also striving to incorporate more high-quality, fresh produce into every meal served.
On Monday, the Center’s executive director Ed McNally will welcome back Kim O’Donnel, trained chef, food writer and author of “The Meat Lover’s Meatless Cookbook”, who helped kick-off the first Healthy Monday event in September, to perform a healthy cooking demonstration for the Center’s two full-time cooks. A hearty, meat-free lentil recipe from O’Donnel’s cookbook will be highlighted for this event as a main dish that will be served to upwards of 500 clients. The Reverend Dred Scott, pastor of St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Turner Station, was also invited to help celebrate this event by performing soul music with his band in the dining room as the clients enjoy their meals. With the help of CLF’s two outreach projects, Baltimore Food and Faith, and the Johns Hopkins Healthy Monday Prokect, special Valentine’s Day cards that include tips for a healthy heart and soul will be given out to all the clients with their meals to further promote the message of good health for the mind, body and soul.
